You see, my mother had a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, the latest generation as of this writing, that she had purchased in August of 2014 and barely used since then. She decided that it would be better if it were sold. Naturally, to make the sale, I turned to my old favorite: eBay. That was a mistake.

After reading through the fees that are associated with selling on eBay, I regretfully agreed to the 10% final listing value fee. Thinking all was good and well, I placed the Surface on eBay. A week later, it sold for $750. Subtract the 10% fee and I was looking at about $675... but when the money finally hit my PayPal account, I only saw $727.95! Apparently, there is a second fee to use the "preferred" method of payment, and it was around 3% of the final listing value. After calculating for shipping costs that include insurance and packaging materials, the net sale was below the $600 mark...

Moral of the story: eBay is not worthy as a selling platform. I am going to look into Amazon, Etsy, and other competitors and see how they stack against eBay / PayPal.Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-47075706063211946202015-02-28T00:58:00.000-05:002015-02-28T00:58:33.171-05:00The Internet, the FCC, and EncryptionWell, it happened. Masquerading under the premise of "keeping the Internet free and open," the FCC just gave itself the power to regulate the already free and open Internet as if Internet Service Providers are Title II utilities. Basically, this translates to censorship and taxes across the board.

For awhile now, I have been experimenting with combinations of email clients, public-key cryptographic software, and different GUIs for managing encryption keys. Those experiments were taken off the back-burner today because of a new and real fear of parts of the Internet being exposed to unconstitutional searches.

The biggest difference between my newest attempt and previous attempts is that I recently purchased a MacBook Air, on which I have already encrypted the entire filesystem and all hard drives that use that computer. I found a lot of new software written exclusively for Mac OS X that integrates with the OS. One application in particular is GPGTools.

GPGTools has a slick key manager GUI called GPG Keychain, and it also integrates itself into Mail.app, making sending and receiving encrypted email very easy. In fact, I am opined to say that this is the easiest implementation of GPG (Gnu Privacy Guard, a PGP [Pretty Good Privacy] compatible, open source software) that I have used to date.

On my Windows 7 computer, I have been using GPG on the backend and Cryptophane 0.7.0 as the key manager GUI to manage encryption, and Mozilla Thunderbird with the Enigmail plugin for sending and receiving encrypted emails. This combination works well, but leaves some to be desired, especially in the configuration department. The various parts of GPGTools work together out-of-the-box, making for a very enjoyable experience.

Please note that these two systems are compatible. Even if email is sent from a system that uses GPGTools and Mail.app, and that email is received by a system that uses GPG with Thunderbird / Enigmail, or vice versa, the email is encryptable and decryptable on both systems as long as both computers have the public key for decryption.

How Public-Key Encryption Works:

In public-key cryptography, a user generates two keys. a pair of public and private keys. The public key can be shared with anyone, but the private key is left on your own system only. The public key is used to encrypt the email that is being sent to someone else, and the private key is used to decrypt email that is sent to yourself.

The public key is typically uploaded to what is called a keyserver, a centralized place where anyone can upload their public keys for anyone else to download it. This is one of the ways to facilitate the sharing of one's public key so that others can begin sending secure email to oneself.

Public-key encryption allows for a secure way to transmit in clear-text what is needed for a person to encrypt and send secure information to another person without giving away the secret used to encrypt or decrypt the information. This is the type of encryption that websites use to secure your web surfing from cyber-eavesdroppers!

How to Get Started with GPG Email Encryption:

If you would like to start encrypting your email, check out the links below!

For Mac users, check out GPGTools.org. It is an all-in-one suite, so just download, install, and follow the tutorial!

For Windows users, check out GnuPG.org. It is the best resource to get you started. I also recommend grabbing the latest binary for GPG (as of the time of this post, it was v1.4.19), using Cryptophane as a GUI because it is probably the easiest to use of what I have seen, and lastly Enigmail extension for Thunderbird for securing email.

Sending Your First Secured Email:

Once you have your new encryption key pair generated and your mail client up and running, you will need to download public keys for other people so that you can send them email. You can do so by searching in the key management software that you recently installed. Try searching for mine using my email address, nick@novalan.org. If you find it, send me a secure email!Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-21333873197322371112015-01-27T00:27:00.001-05:002015-01-27T00:30:37.271-05:00My new/old MacBook AirWhile traveling home for Christmas, I suddenly got a spur-of-the-moment idea to buy a MacBook Air. I had thought about getting one for quite awhile, so long so that all of my friends jumped on the band-wagon before I could find one in my budget. Well, suddenly my budget was looking pretty flexible as a searched through multiple eBay listings.

I had found many different listings that looked promising, only to have a feature that wasn't what I wanted - an 11" screen instead of a 13" screen, or a 64GB SSD instead of a 128GB SSD. But I did not give up hope! I kept looking through listings until I came across one that met all my requirements, and it was within my budget. The only catch: it was a 2011-model that had some cosmetic wear and minor damage.

After bidding on it and eventually winning the auction, I received the MacBook Air in the mail. It had no accessories, not even a sleeve or original box - it simply came in bubble wrap and a cardboard shipping box. Appropriately for the season, I quickly dispensed of the wrappings like a kid during Christmas. Synchronously, I also opened the Amazon box that contained my replacement charger, and connected it to the half-charged Air. I was up but not yet running.

After downloading and installing a clean copy of OS X Yosemite, installing updates and software, and logging into iCloud, I was not only running, but running faster than I thought possible on a computer that is now three-and-a-half-years-old. This little bugger is fast! It has completely replaced my desktop and my other laptops as most-frequently-used-computer. Mac OS X Yosemite has something to do with this as it is a clean and simple interface that I found readily enjoyable for someone who has long beed a Windows (and sometimes Ubuntu) OS guy.

Speaking of Windows, Boot Camp made it a breeze to install Windows 7 64-bit, and VMware Fusion make it easy to run Windows software when I can't find a Mac alternative. All-in-all, it was a well-spent $450 to upgrade to something older than most of the other computers in my house.

Specs:

Intel Core i5 1.7GHz CPU

13" 1440x900 matte display

4GBs of DDR3

128GB SSD

(Part of the reason we had to switch carriers rather than just plans from AT&T is because my family moved to northern Maine in 2010, where AT&T has no service coverage.) The Verizon plan seemed like it would help my family of four by allowing those of us who use more data to "even out" those who use less data. Then we ran into problems...

The first problem I noticed was that the cost per gigabyte on the low-data-volume plans was high enough that it almost wasn't worth buying. My mother would look at how much the total plan costs, eyeing the only area that could be cut: data. We would think that "we will only use four gigabytes this month. Everyone stay in your limit," but that would quickly lead to problems when one of us went flying over how much data one was "supposed" to use. This meant that we were constantly upgrading our plan to cover the data usage before we incurred the $15/GB overage fee.

The second problem I noticed was when we tried to add my sister's (now ex-) boyfriend, he was even worse than the rest of us at staying within the self-imposed, arbitrary data limits. I recognized that, to effectively bill each person for the amount of data one is using, I would have to set the plan's data allowance high enough to accommodate the estimated data usage, then lower it to how much was actually used at the end of the billing cycle. This lead to an almost cat-and-mouse situation, constantly trying to adjust how much we needed.

Third, data usage being used without regard to monthly volume lead to problems with trying to bill the person who used the data, because as the plan needed more data, the cost per gigabyte would be lowered. Was this cost saving to be passed on to everyone, or just the person who was using enough to justify needing more data?

Fourth, Verizon's introduction of the Edge plan: Edge allows a user to buy a phone separately from their line contract on a monthly plan with or without a down-payment (one can pay up to 60% of the value of the phone to reduce the monthly cost) or to buy the phone outright. This can benefit the user because Verizon will reduce your line access cost. The line access discount is either $10 if your plan has less than 10 GBs, reducing the access fee to $30 per month, or $25 if your plan has 10 GBs or more, reducing the access fee to $15 per month. Those discount rates also apply if you use a device you already own. The Edge program can save you a bundle of money if you have 10GB+ data on your plan.

Fifth, my recommendation: I created a cost spreadsheet that calculates how much data costs, how much data up to ten users would need, and the total line access per user based on their data, the data rate of the plan, and if that user is on a standard 2-year contract or Edge.
(Here is the permalink to view/share the spreadsheet: http://h.yper.link/VerizonCostTable)
Use the spreadsheet to calculate how much you could save by changing the contract types for each line and how much data each line is using. Keep in mind that any costs for phones on Edge are not included in the line total cost or the plan total cost.

Lastly, I am currently experimenting with adding more people (who I trust, of course) to the plan so that we all benefit from high-volume data rates. Eventually, I will follow up to this post with the results of this experiment. If you have any questions, please comment below!Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-17580617267295724312012-11-28T02:00:00.000-05:002015-01-26T23:58:09.831-05:00CPU 100% while idlingLately I have had a weird problem... My primary computer system will be fast and responsive, like it should be, but randomly it would suddenly slow to a crawl. After opening the Task Manager, I found that my CPU usage was at 100%. That should not be possibly with my system so I knew something was wrong. I was pretty sure it wan't anything system- or driver-related, so I started investigating. In the Task Manager, the Processes tab showed no process that had any CPU usage - as if another process was using 100% of all the CPU resources. Even when I clicked "Show processes from all users," nothing was appearing. After a lot of frustration, I just let it sit there... lo and behold, a process showed up that was using 99% of the CPU! It was called "CaptureLibService.exe" and it was loaded by the SYSTEM.

I researched the process and found that it is installed with the software Freemake Video Downloader. The service is installed and used by Freemake to scan network traffic for embedded videos. This is a very fast method to download those pesky embedded videos, but when the service acts up and consumes all the resources, it isn't worth it.

If you would like to prevent this service from starting up automatically, but you want to keep the software, do the following:

1) Press Start + R to open run dialogue, then type msconifg

2) Click on the Services tab, then click on the Service heading to ascend alphabetically

3) Look for "FreemakeVideoCapture" and uncheck the box to the left

This will prevent it from starting automatically.Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-1035098149490255762012-05-08T16:00:00.000-04:002012-05-08T16:00:37.665-04:00CrashPlan CrashesRecently I had a problem with CrashPlan where the Backup Engine would crash randomly. It seemed like this was just a problem with the OS (Windows 7 x64 SP1) because I had been messing with it a lot, but after a re-install, the same problems were happening. This got me thinking about the amount of data I was backing up and how much system memory was needed for that amount of data (around 1.5TBs). The current CrashPlan settings allocated 512MBs of memory, so I upped it to 1024MBs, and that did the trick. It was as easy as this:

1) Open Notepad as Administrator

2) Open this file

C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\CrashPlanService.ini

3) Edit the variable -Xmx512M
A recommendable amount is 1024M.

4) If you can still access the CrashPlan Desktop UI, open it. Double click the logo in the top right. This will open a CrashPlan service terminal; type restart, press enter.

Your CrashPlan software should no longer crash due to memory problems. If it does, then change that value to something higher.Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-71573002829627012802010-08-10T01:10:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.507-04:00Day 17 - 21<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">These last few days went flying by so fast! After we left Portland, we headed up the coast to Rockland and ended up staying there for a few days. In that time, we drove up to Bar Harbor. On the way, you have to cross the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which was constructed recently. It has the tallest bridge observatory in the world, and is the only one in the western hemisphere.

Just a walk from the bridge is Fort Knox, which was named after the first Secretary of War, as was the famous Fort Knox in Kentucky. I would just like to say that I am sorry that I stopped posting on here for about a week... We got up to the Jablonski's place on the night of Day 10 (Wednesday, July 28th) and stayed there until the morning of Day 15 (Monday, August 2nd), and during that time I was really tired, excited, and just plain lazy!

The following is an account of what we did in the past few days...

Amendment to Day 10:
I forgot to mention that we went to the Texas Roadhouse with Dave, Jake, and Jessica. It was a fair meal in a pleasant atmosphere and a great night of conversation and fun.
And just to make it clear, Dave and Alisa are the parents, and Jake (18), Nick (16), and Jessica (14) are their kids.
My parent's also checked into the Comfort Inn in Milwaukee. This information will be necessary for what happened in Day 11.

Day 11:
For the most part, in the mornings we would just get up, eat, play video games, and talk a lot. In this evening, Jake, Nick, Alex, and I went swimming at the hotel at which my parents were staying while our parents went hottubbing. We left for the cinemas and saw The Sorcerer's Apprentice (it was pretty good, but somewhat predictable and non-climactic - 6/10). On the way back to the hotel, Alisa called Jake and Nick and requested that they bring Gatorade for Dave when they returned home, so we detoured over to Walgreen's. On the way over, we had one of the funnest times during the entire stay. We cranked up the stereo and the car was filled with Techno and Rap music, and we were all "dancing" to the music, as much as one might while sitting strapped to a seat (honest it was more like arm-waving and wiggling). The climax of the night was when a song aired on the radio and Nick hopped out of the car (in Walgreen's parking lot) and proceeded to act out some crazy awesome moves. Epic.

When Alex and I got back, we found out that our parents had a problem with the hotel. While we were gone, a little league team from EauClaire, Wisconsin created a disturbance in the pool area. The chaperons were drinking alcohol (problem 1) in glass bottles (problem 2) and responded negatively (problem 3) to the request of the other patrons in the pool area. They then proceeded to address isolated individuals who had requested them to stop drinking (i.e. my dad) with taunts and verbal jabs (problem 4), which continued even into the next morning (problem 5). The manager was finally available for contact, and when address of the situation, completely lost his spine as if it were made of jello. He became a wimpy little person who would not enforce hotel policy (problem 6). We immediately contacted the Comfort Inn corporate office and the Better Business Bureau to let them know of the preceding events. The state liquor board, local newspaper, and little league team will also be contacted. After this event, we changed hotels, and my parents stayed in the Hampton Inn for the remainder of the visit.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Day 12:
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I am pretty sure this was the day that Alex, Jake, and I went to The Quarry, a retired mining quarry that filled in with water, and one can now swim in it. It was fun. We got some sun and swimming, which totally made my day.

Day 13:
Saturday, Alisa took us on a drive-through tour of the city of Milwaukee.

Day 14:
It was today that we went to the Wisconsin Dells, a couple hours north of the Jablonski's abode. Sadly, Jake's work conflicted with these plans, so he was unable to enjoy it was us. At the Dells, there are a bunch of theme parks, one of which, Mount Olympus, we went to. It was sooo fun! There were four wooden roller coasters, one of which, Hades, had a tunnel that goes completely beneath and across the parking lot, then comes out the other side for a short while, and back under the parking lot! There were also many go-kart tracks (not bumper cars... lets just say I learned that the hard way) which were pretty fun. But the Water Park is where you find me. There are two wave pools: a normal, continuous undulation pool, and the Poseidon; every couple minutes, this pool creates a 9-foot wave. It is absolutely sick! Nick and I were in this pool probably half of our stay just body surfing. We could transverse approximately half (probably a little more) of the accessible pool on a single wave! When we were all finally too tired to do anything more, we headed out. All of us fell asleep in their Excursion on the way home. The hot tub at the new hotel was a very relaxing end to the day.

Day 15:
Monday morning, we left :(
We had an amazing time with the Jablonski's. It was really amazing that even after 12 years of not seeing or contacting each other, our friendships from 6 years old proved valid :D I cannot wait to see you guys again, and thanks for hosting us!
Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-30438741865104777752010-07-29T02:37:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.552-04:00Day 10Woohoo!!! We made it!!! We actually got to the Jablonski's place!!! After getting the RV all fixed up and a great night's rest at the Best Western Canterbury Inn in Coralville, Iowa, we hopped back on the highway. After a missed exit, we arrived here and are very much so enjoying the first night of our visit. We haven't seen the Jablonski family in about 12 years, since we were living in Camelot up in north Spokane. I cannot really think of anything else that happened today because I am too excited and sleepy :P so I will post other information and photos tomorrow!Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-41715599585504704332010-07-28T00:56:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.563-04:00Day 9<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Yesterday I posted that we were going to try to be in Milwaukee tomorrow night, but today we were making great timing and were on track to get there sometime this evening... that is, until our cab air conditioner completely shut off and the bearings in the alternator started to go bad. Mind you, this is a fix-or-repair-daily that we're driving... Anyway, right now we are stuck in Coralville, Iowa, which is near Iowa City. We did though find a silver lining to this, because there is a really awesome hotel here: the Best Western is medieval themed and has an amazing restaurant called the House of Lords in the basement. The whole feel of this place is really nice, and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to stop in this area.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">As for the schedule, we are probably 4-5 hours away from Milwaukee, and then another distance and time to the Jablonski's place.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Today wasn't completely un-fun. We had a lot of fun just hanging out today, got to talk a lot. But we also had to take Scott to the airport because today was his trip home. It was a lot of fun having him with us and we are going to miss him a lot.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This is a photo of the four of us with my dad's aunt Mary and cousin Carla.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;">

Sharon, Charles, Carla, Mary, Alex, Nick (me)

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I also got to try out Gelato for the first time at Mead's Corner, a local coffee shop. Our road trip was pushed ahead by 2 weeks, and in the chaos and confusion of packing between the vacation and road trip, we forgot to let them know, so naturally conflicting plans ensued. Now we will be going on to the next part of the trip. Tomorrow morning we will be headed directly up to Wisconsin to visit the Jablonski family. We should be there Wednesday evening. Tomorrow will be a "travel day" so it will probably be boring and uneventful. But at least we will be out of the Kansan humidity!
Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-65580714364639984122010-07-26T15:52:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.587-04:00Day 7First off, I was not able to post Day 7 last night because I could not find WiFi, and I was a little sick after I ate. It is humid, hot, windy, has tons of bugs, and this place is flat. I mean flat. I really didn't understand what flat meant until I got here. The sad part is that I don't even have any photos to post from today! I really don't enjoy this place all that much, but it is totally worth visiting when I have an entire family showing up for a reunion that goes back to my great great great grandfather... or something like that. All I know is I am hanging out with my 3rd and 4th cousins right now. We ended up arriving at the campgrounds after the office was closed, and left before they were open. When we finally stopped to have breakfast, we were in a small town in Wyoming called Rawlins. I probably awakened around 0930-1030hrs. This day we specifically intended to visit the Old Faithful geyser. After all, who goes to Yellowstone National Park and doesn't see it? While we were there, my grandparents and cousins were watching us on the live geyser webcam [link]. It was really funny because we got to see other families standing in the same place waving at the camera and calling their loved ones, letting them know that they are live on the internet!
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">After watching Old Faithful erupt on its ever-so-predictable 90 minute schedule, we proceeded to visit all of the other geysers. When I was finally completely aware and awake, we were traveling through the rest of the Montanna part of the trip. There isn't much to say because not much happened.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">When we finally arrived at Yellowstone, it was around dusk and the wildlife were exteremely active. We got a lot of amazing photos (which I will post when I get some wifi. If you can't tell already, I am blogging from my phone :p ). We finally got to the RV campsite late and ate dinner around 2300hrs. That's pretty much the summary of day 2.
Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-57300812641278011952010-07-22T20:41:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.667-04:00Day 1<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Well! We are officially on the move!! Yesterday we spent all day cleaning and finishing up packing the house while the movers packed everything into the epic-sized semi. We hit the road in the overstuffed recreational vehicle around 2000hrs after visiting our grandparents one last time. Later that night at 0300hrs mountain time, we stopped by a KOA in Missoula, Montana. Since the grounds were full, one of the guys in charge let us access the showers and then we stayed at the Wally World RV camp. There is a cry ordinance in Missoula that is suppose to prevent that from happening, but when we got there, at least 40 other RVs were already there, taking over the parking lot! We got a surprisingly good night :)
Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-62290071105744167592010-07-16T05:14:00.000-04:002015-08-12T13:45:33.678-04:00Maine!<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Well, the time has finally come! I am moving to Maine! As for NovaLAN, it will now be headquarted in Presque Isle because that is where I will be living, but it will keep its connections with the Spokane area. One new goal of NovaLAN is now to host cross-continent LAN parties! It will be a small challenge and probably prove to be more fun that anything!Nick Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15630449745338234166noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-57994427203927205282009-10-21T01:33:00.000-04:002009-10-21T01:55:41.123-04:00Peer 2 Peer vs. Direct CopyWell I was testing which would be faster to copy 276MB file between computers today. Direct copying from one computer to another over my wireless network took about 5 minutes at about 1MBps download speed that change randomly when windows felt like doing so. Next I tested the Peer 2 Peer (p2p) copying it only took 4 minutes with one server hosting the torrent and one client downloading the torrent on my network. I got speeds up to 1.1MBps and speed would drop a little when I was using the network heavy, which is normal to see. I can decrease my download time by adding two to three more server hosting the same torrent file which would increase the places the torrent can download pieces from. So in the future more testing of this theory of p2p being faster than direct copying over a local network. Tell me what you think or if you have any ideas or thoughts on this. Love to hear from people.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905037348402935115.post-8426069979929495932009-10-14T22:00:00.000-04:002012-05-08T16:10:21.850-04:00Windows 7 - MSDN AA MD5 Hashes<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Recently I have been having a problem with my Windows 7 ISOs and installations. Windows 7 will not install properly to my system. I have tried all of the "check your memory for corruption" as well as the "burn the ISO at a very slow rate" routines, but with no success. Typically I install Windows 7 from my thumb drive anyway because its probably 5x to 10x faster than by DVD. Also, I use the MSDN (Academic Alliance) images.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Just recently I checked the MD5 checksum of the image I was using to install Windows 7 and found that it did not match the MD5 checksum of the newly downloaded image direct from Microsoft's MSDN servers. Here are the MD5 checksums of the new images as well as the original image file names for reference.

I really hope that this information will help anyone with a Windows 7 installation error. This should probably only be used in the case of an MSDN image installation though because I have not checked the RTM/OEM or retail images to see if any are the same.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3
